How to Get a Travel Visa to Tanzania

Planning a trip to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro or explore its wildlife? One of the first things you’ll need is a travel visa to Tanzania. Whether you're from the United States, Europe, or anywhere else, getting a Tanzanian visa is fairly simple.

Tanzania offers two convenient options for getting a visa: Online Visa and On-Arrival Visa. Since the introduction of the Online Visa system, visas are no longer issued at embassies. Let us break down the process for both options.

1. Online Visa Platform

The easiest and most recommended way to get your visa is through the Online Visa Platform. You can apply directly on the official Tanzania Immigration website (www.immigration.go.tz) or through the link: visa.immigration.go.tz. Be cautious about using only these official sites to avoid scams or incorrect links.

Before applying, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months and has at least one blank page for the visa stamp. Standard visa applications are typically processed within ten days, but some applications may take longer based on the discretion of the authorities. If there’s a delay beyond this time, you can follow up through the official email: info@immigration.go.tz.

The online platform offers various types of visas, including:

  • Ordinary (Single-Entry) Visa
  • Business Visa
  • Multiple Entry Visa
  • Transit Visa
  • Student Visa
Each visa type comes with its own set of requirements and pricing, so be sure to read the instructions carefully and adhere to the payment guidelines.

Pros:

  • You get to skip paperwork at the airport.

  • Some travelers report it being quicker during busy travel periods.

  • Peace of mind knowing you're approved before departure.

Cons:

  • Ironically, the eVisa line is sometimes slower.

  • Some travelers report waiting an hour or more while friends doing visa on arrival cleared faster.

2. On-Arrival Visa

The On-Arrival Visa option is available for travelers from certain countries, provided their nationality is not listed under the Referral Visa category. It’s important to countercheck if your country is eligible for this option before traveling.

Even though you can get a visa on arrival, it is strongly recommended to use the online platform to avoid delays or complications. If you choose the On-Arrival Visa route, ensure your passport meets the same requirements as for the online visa: six months of validity and one unused visa page.

Pros:

  • It's often faster, especially if the online visa line is long.

  • You can pay with cash or card (USD is preferred).

  • Takes just a few minutes at the airport immigration window.

Cons:

  • The wait time can vary depending on your flight and how busy the airport is.

  • Not available for all nationalities. Some countries are required to apply in advance with a referral visa.

Key Tips for a Smooth Visa Application

  • Follow the instructions carefully: Before applying, read the terms and conditions on the official website to avoid rejection of your visa.
  • Check visa fees: Pricing varies depending on the type of visa you’re applying for. Make sure you’re aware of the correct fee to avoid payment issues.
  • Plan ahead: Start your application well before your travel date to account for any potential delays in processing.
